Yvonne (Pauline) Murgatroyd-Rigg was born at 28 Wallbutton Road, Brockley, London on 15th April 1911. The family believe that her mother wished her to be named Pauline Enid, but her father registered her as Yvonne. Inside the family she was always called Pauline. She died aged 72 at Pagham on 22nd June 1983 [1983Q2 Chichester Vol:18, Page:1393]. She had been a multi-lingual secretary before WW2 working in London where she met her future husband.
As a spinster Secretary aged 26 she married Alfred John Rigg (1914-2009) described as a bachelor Clerk aged 23 at St Catherines church Hatcham, Deptford on 8th May 1937 [1937Q2 Deptford Vol: 1d, Page: 1636]. The fathers were Alfred John Rigg an Engineer and Arthur Haley Murgatroyd an Advertising Agent. The witnesses were Frank Herbert Upton (cousin of the groom and Best Man) and A J Rigg (father).
The war years were difficult for most people. Her husband was away in India - for long times incommunicado - and didn't return until after the end of hostilities. Even then he suffered two bouts of malaria before being demobbed from the RAF.
During the war it became impossible to pay the mortgage on the family home from the reduced family income; our father was in India on National Service pay. My mother represented herself in a Court action brought presumably by the property company; she could not afford to employ legal council. The Court threw out the application with the Judge saying: "This young woman has her husband abroad defending his country." As a result a lower payment was agreed for the period of hostilities.
They both entered the teaching profession. Yvonne taught Shorthand and Typing at Evening Classes, and also for a while at Chislehurst & Sidcup County Technical School. John after doing a Teacher Training Course after being demobbed, rose through teaching ranks to retire as Deputy Headmaster at Grays Farm Junior School.
She had four children:
Her parents were Alice Emma Dewhirst (1873-1949) and Arthur Haley Murgatroyd (1871-1946)
