May Catherine Phillips (1892-1984)

May Catherine Phillips was the eldest child of Harriet Rigg (1863-1941) and Jack Phillips (1866-1956). She had an interesting and sheltered life as her parents were comfortably well off. She developed an interest in psychic phenomena and was a well known and respected Christian medium. She also painted and in this claimed to be guided by a spirit mentor. When in her 70s she even painted nudes - guided by her spirit mentor - and was surprisingly frank about it all for a spinster from such a sheltered upbringing. The family home, which I often visited was at 1 Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead and I vaguely remember her father when visiting as a child. The house was fascinating for a young child being full of curious objects collected from around the world.

May Catherine Phillips was a cousin of my grandfather.
