Alexander Gordon McDonald (c1789-1878)

Alexander Gordon McDonald was recorded at the marriage of his daughter Catherine Sarah McDonald as a "shoemaker" from Banff in Scotland. He was born between 1789 and 1797 and presumably came to London with his children including daughters Mary Ann (1825-??), Catherine Sarah (1827-1899) and his son Alexander(1828-??).

Alexander Gordon is recorded in the England 1851 census as a widower. A possible IGI entry for his marriage and children is:
- Marriage of Alexander McDonald to Barbara Craig on 8 Oct 1820 in Cargill, Perth, Scotland.
- Mary McDonald christened 9 Mar 1823 at Cargill, Perth Scotland with mother Barbara Craig, and father Alexander McDonald.
- Catherine McDonald born 25 July 1828 and christened 16 August 1828 at Cargill, Perth Scotland with mother Barbara Craig, and father Alexander McDonald.
The ages recorded in the 1841 and 1851 census are known to be approximate, and maybe the "where born" is inaccurate too. We have been unable to find any record of the three McDonald children born in London but have found plausible records in Scotland.

In the 1841 census [HO 107/716/11 Folio: 41, Page: 3] at Gowers Place, Tower Hamlets in the parish of St Mary Whitechapel are recorded:

the daughter Catherine is probably identified in a household in Cannon Street St Mary Bothaw [HO 107/722/5] which included:
the daughter Mary Ann is probably identified in a household in Nile Cottage Greenwich Kent, in the parish of St Alphage [HO 107/489/5] which included:

In the 1851 census at 34 Church Road, St Geo in the East [HO107/1548/74, Folio: 74; Page: 20], there were recorded:

In the 1861 census entry for 39 John Street, London [RG9/278-153] there were recorded:

In the 1871 census[RG10/535 Folio: 66, Page: 29] at 75 Sheridan Street, St George Tower Hamlets London UK there resided:

He had two daughters and two sons:

Alexander McDonald was one of the witnesses to the marriage of Mary Ann Rigg(1850-??) in 1875. Another daughter Mary Ann Donald is recorded as part of the Rigg household - sister-in-law to James Rigg - in the 1881 census. She is recorded as aged 56 and a Milk Seller but at this time Alexander McDonald is not recorded at the same address: 9 Dempsey Street London, Middlesex, England.

Alexander Gordon McDonald and Barbara Craig are two of my great great great grandparents.

His birth is probably:
Alexander Macdonald, son of William Macdonald and Elizabeth Grant baptised in Cabrach, Scotland on 28/7/1789

Alexander Gordon McDonald died on 6th May 1878 aged 89 at 128 Bromley Street Ratcliff, London [1878Q2 Stepney Vol: 1c, Page: 309]. He was described as "Formerly a Milkman". The informant who also lived at 128 Bromley Street was his daughter Mary Ann McDonald who signed with an X and was present at the death.
